Studded snow tires -- do you even need them? What
types are the best? How do you know when you need a new set? These are common
questions that every vehicle owner asks.
First of all, keep in mind that
many automobile owners could save themselves a lot of money -- simply because
they don't need to purchase a set of studded snow tires. The reason for this
is that studded snow tires are for extremely snowy conditions, so if you do not
live in a part of the country which gets a lot of snowfall during the winter months,
you actually don't need to use them. Why pay for something you really don't
need?
What
types of studded snow tires are the best? Well, if you go to your local auto dealership
they'll try to tell you that only the brands they sell will work well with
your vehicle -- and you know that just isn't so.
Every community of
any size has at least one business that specializes in the sale of tires -- including
studded snow tires -- and you can usually purchase a set of four for about the
same amount of money that you would pay for two at your dealership.
How
do you know when you need a new set ? I like to use the "sound test"
-- when I drive my car and can't hear the "popping" sound very well,
I know the studs may be starting to wear down -- that's when I began shopping
around for a new set.

Studs are illegal in 7 states (as of 12/09). Most states have a stud "season". Here in IN it's 10/1-5/1 (which is way too long to run your studs in NE IN). I usually go Thanksgiving to Easter.
Studs make a HUGE difference in on the ice, at least in a rear wheel drive. I have a Jeep Wrangler with excellent all season (if not, some-what off-road) tires and my 2wd S10s (yes.. plural, I'm on my third one now) will go through anything the Jeep will with studs. The largest improvement with studs that many people never consider is stopping distance. The studs literally dig into the ice and get your car stopped, in a straight and orderly fashion.
I have read all the rave good of the Blizzaks, but chose to get with the Firestone WinterForce simply because the Blizzaks cannot be studded. Around here studs are $10/tire, so the $20 is well worth the added security. And, the Blizzaks are $20 a tire more anyhow.
I'm a firm believer in studs.. Just my $.02

Studded tires are illegal in most states, that doesn't mean some people still don't use them.. personally I don't think the performance on snow is any better than regular quality snow tires, on ice.. maybe

I have to agree about the blizzak's, they are simply one outstanding snow tire. I am using the WS50's but what a difference they make on snow. They don't have a super long tread wear on dry pavements but on snow, they rock.

I have just ordered a set of Bridgestone Blizzak WS60's. I have had Blizzaks on my FWD Altima for several years and have to say they are by far the best snow tire I have ever used, Better than studded tires by far. I can't wait to get them on my Outback in snow
